held myth is that it is cheaper to heat your property with natural gas. Heat  pumps are much more efficient and have a lower operating cost by a wide margin. Heat pumps are designed primarily for either heating, cooling or both. Modern heat pumps consist of the following components:

  • Thermostat. This may be a manual type or a digital fully automatic electronicially programmable type. A programmable thermostat will allow you to set back or forward the temprature of your heat pump at various times of the day or night and on specific days of the week for energy savings.
  • Air handling fan component to circulate conditioned air throughout the building.
  • Air filtration to remove dust, pollen and allergens from the circulated air.
  • Internal heat exchanger coil to allow the transfer of heat and cold from inside to outside.
  • External heat exchanger coil and fan to transfer heat and cold to the outside air.
  • Geothermal heat pumps require a series of holes drilled into the ground with plastic tubes circulating a liquid heat transferring medium.
  • Electronic circuit board to control heat and cool functions within the various components.
  • An existing forced air furnace may be modified to allow the addition of a heat pump.

As with any manufactured product, heat pumps are not all created equal.
